Campus Ministries Requirements: What You Need to Know

As a new student at Jessup, there are two key Campus Ministries requirements that will shape your experience here: the Chapel Requirement and the Spiritual Life Credit (SLC) Requirement. Both are mandatory, but only the SLC Requirement is connected to graduation. This means you must complete it in order to have your degree officially conferred. We’re here to support you every step of the way as you engage in these opportunities for spiritual growth.

Chapel Requirement

  • Who Has A Chapel Requirement?

    All full-time (12+ units) traditional undergraduate students are required to attend 20 Chapels each semester.

    There are four types of students who will automatically receive a Chapel waiver for a predetermined number of Chapel credits due to their academic or program involvement:

    In-season athletes, aviation students, theater students participating in a production and students in the Nursing program.

    These students do not need to submit a Chapel Petition unless they are seeking an additional reduction beyond their automatic waiver.

  • Chapel Times

    The Porch Chapel - Student-led chapels with student speakers.

    Mondays @ 7:00 & 8:00 pm in the Student Union.

    Morning Chapels - Featuring guest authors, pastors and worship leaders.

    Wednesday & Friday @ 9:30 am in the Chapel Event Center.

    Encounter Chapels - Personalized, interactive worship experiences. Check the iAttended app for locations.

    Fridays @ 9:30 am | Various Locations around campus. Check Iattended app for locations.

  • How To Earn Credit!

    Jessup uses the iAttended App to track Chapel attendance. When you arrive, open the app, tap “Scan Code,” and use your phone’s camera to scan the live QR code displayed inside and outside the Chapel venue. This scan will automatically record your attendance.

    Going to be short a few Chapel credits?

    You can earn extra Chapel credit by serving! Join the Welcome Team, Prayer Team, or Worship Band and receive one additional Chapel credit for each service where you volunteer. To join a team, click here.

  • What Are Chapel Waivers?

    If you anticipate not being able to meet the 20-Chapel requirement for any reason, you may submit a Chapel Petition during the first two weeks of the semester. Late petitions will be accepted up to the halfway point of the semester for a $25 late fee.

  • Chapel Non-Compliance Fine

    Students who do not meet the Chapel Requirement will be considered non-compliant and subject to a tiered system of consequences:

    Level 1 (First Occurrence):
    Complete a Chapel Policy Acknowledgment and Attendance Commitment, and pay a $150 fine.

    Level 2 (Second Occurrence):
    Complete the same acknowledgment and commitment, and pay a $300 fine.

    Level 3 (Third Occurrence):
    Complete the acknowledgment and commitment, pay a $500 fine, and schedule a meeting with the Director of Campus Ministries, PJ Garza, to create a plan moving forward.

Spiritual Life Credit (SLC) Requirement

  • Why Are SLCs A Graduation Requirement?

    Part of our mission in Campus Ministries is to create opportunities for students to learn who Jesus is and grow in their faith journey through discipleship. A key part of being a disciple of Jesus is learning how to serve. Jessup is committed to these goals, and we express that commitment by requiring students to participate in service and discipleship experiences as part of their co-curricular journey and their graduation requirement.

  • How Many Do I Need To Earn?

    The number of Spiritual Life Credits you’re required to earn depends on the number of academic units accepted by the Registrar’s Office when you’re admitted:

    0–44 units = 12 SLCs required to graduate

    45–59 units = 10 SLCs required to graduate

    60–74 units = 8 SLCs required to graduate

    75+ units = 6 SLCs required to graduate

    There are a variety of ways to earn Spiritual Life Credits. These opportunities are divided into two main categories: Service and Discipleship.

  • Service Credits

    Service is focused on introducing people outside the church to the love of God and being the tangible hands and feet of Jesus. You need to obtain at least 1 credit of Service.

    Local Outreach: 1 credit for every 4 hours of service

    Global Outreach / Mission Trip: 4 credits (Minimum of 7 days on the field)

    Local Church Service: 1 credit for every 4 hours of service

    Community Service: 1 credit for every 4 hours of service

  • Discipleship Credits

    Discipleship is focused on students being immersed in community and being poured into by spiritual mentors that can guide them along in their walk with Jesus. Discipleship is a required category. You need to obtain at least 1 credit of Discipleship.

    Jessup Spiritual Formation Group (SFG): 2 credits

    Church Small Group: 2 credits

    Must meet for at least 1 hour every week for at least 9 weeks during the semester

    Intentional Mentorship: 2 credits

    Must meet for at least 1 hour every week for at least 9 weeks during the semester

    Discipleship Retreat: 1 credit

    Must complete at least 4 hours of workshops, sessions, or intentional training to receive credit.

  • I am short credits & I am a Senior!

    Feeling stressed about finishing your Spiritual Life Credits? Don’t worry—any service or discipleship you’ve participated in while enrolled as a Jessup student can count toward your requirement. Have you volunteered at your local church, joined a Bible study, or served in your community? That all counts!

    Keep in mind that in order for your degree to be officially conferred, all SLC requirements must be completed by December 31 for fall graduates and May 31 for spring graduates.

    To receive credit, simply submit your completed SLC using either the online form or a paper form (Found in the Student Life Office).
